Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to ensure the safety, dignity, and rights of women and girls involved in all Shoe4Africa activities, projects, and partnerships. This policy reflects our commitment, since 1995, to creating a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment where women and girls are protected from all forms of harm, discrimination, and exploitation.


Scope

This policy applies to:

  1. All staff, volunteers, contractors, and representatives of Shoe4Africa.
  2. All activities and operations, including events, partnerships, and interactions with the public.
  3. All beneficiaries, particularly women and girls engaged with or supported by Shoe4Africa programs.

Core Principles

  1. Zero Tolerance for Abuse or Exploitation: Any form of physical, emotional, sexual, or financial abuse is strictly prohibited.
  2. Equality and Inclusion: Women and girls of all backgrounds are entitled to equal protection and opportunities, regardless of age, race, ethnicity, disability, or socioeconomic status.
  3. Empowerment: Promote the autonomy and decision-making power of women and girls through education, health, and community initiatives.
  4. Confidentiality: All safeguarding concerns will be handled with sensitivity and confidentiality.

Responsibilities

Shoe4Africa Staff and Representatives

  • Awareness: Understand and uphold safeguarding principles.
  • Training: Participate in regular safeguarding training sessions.
  • Reporting: Report any concerns or incidents to the Safeguarding Officer immediately.

Management Team

  • Ensure safeguarding policies are integrated into all programs and operations.
  • Appoint a Safeguarding Officer to oversee policy implementation and manage concerns.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments for activities involving women and girls.

Safeguarding Officer, who will

  • Act as the main point of contact for safeguarding concerns.
  • Investigate reported incidents promptly and thoroughly.
  • Maintain records of all safeguarding issues and actions taken.
  • Liaise with external authorities when required, such as law enforcement or child protection agencies.

Key Commitments

1. Safe Environments

  • Design all facilities, events, and programs to minimize risks of harm or exploitation.
  • Ensure proper supervision and gender-sensitive staffing for activities involving women and girls.

2. Prevention of Abuse

  • Conduct background checks on all staff, volunteers, and contractors.
  • Provide training on recognizing and addressing abuse, harassment, and exploitation.
  • Implement codes of conduct that outline acceptable behavior.

3. Response to Safeguarding Concerns

  • Establish a clear, confidential reporting system for beneficiaries and staff.
  • Take immediate action to protect individuals at risk.
  • Investigate allegations thoroughly and fairly, ensuring due process.

4. Partnership Standards

  • Work only with partners and vendors who demonstrate an equal commitment to safeguarding.
  • Include safeguarding clauses in all contracts and partnership agreements.

Reporting and Accountability

  • Internal Reporting: Concerns should be reported immediately to the Safeguarding Officer using Shoe4Africa’s incident reporting form.
  • External Reporting: Cases of abuse or exploitation will be referred to appropriate local authorities, such as child welfare agencies or law enforcement.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Conduct regular audits and reviews of safeguarding practices to ensure effectiveness and compliance.

Special Focus Areas

1. Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

  • Shoe4Africa has, and will continue to provide education programs to address GBV and empower women and girls to recognize, resist, and report harmful behaviors.
  • Partner with local organizations to provide counseling and legal support for survivors.

2. Inclusion of Vulnerable Groups

  • Shoe4Africa addresses the unique needs of marginalized groups, such as those with disabilities or from minority communities.
  • Shoe4Africa ensures all programs are accessible and inclusive.

3. Empowerment Through Programs

  • Shoe4Africa offers health, education, and mentorship programs that build confidence, skills, and independence among women and girls.
  • Facilitates peer-support networks and leadership training.

Consequences of Policy Breach

Any staff member, volunteer, or partner found violating this policy will face disciplinary action, which may include termination of employment, cancellation of contracts, or legal action.


Policy Review

This policy will be reviewed annually by the Board of Directors to incorporate feedback, changes in legislation, and best practices.
