shoe4africa - make the difference!
Hi Friends & Family,
I have committed to run the New York Marathon alongside my sister, Meg Lyons Mahoney! Many of you may know that running a marathon has been a dream of mine since I said goodbye to the world of organized sports, but it is quite a daunting feat. With my sister’s encouragement as a New York marathon veteran, as well as the motivation I have garnered from the stories of those who have run in past years in support of Shoe4africa, I *cannot* wait for race day.
What many of you may not know is that I planned to study in Kenya & Tanzania after my freshman year in college. However, life (and COVID) had other plans! While I have yet to make it there to visit in person, I was blessed to learn about this wonderful NGO that supports health, education, and empowerment of individuals in the sub-Saharan African region.
A program that put down its roots in Kenya in 1995 has now grown to include Tanzania, Morocco, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and South Africa. This year, donations made to my page will go directly to children in Africa who are born into poverty and have been diagnosed with cancer. The odds are against these children; nine out of ten children diagnosed with cancer are dying in sub-Saharan Africa with the major reason being there is not a single children’s cancer hospital in the entire region of sub-Saharan Africa (a population of over one billion). While, In America, we have reduced childhood cancer deaths to 10% of those diagnosed, and 90% of those healed are treated in cancer centers dedicated to children. Please visit the website listed below for more information on shoe4africa’s impact!
I hope you will consider supporting me as I run for the charity that is going to bring the first children’s cancer hospital to this region!
